From the MarketSaw blog (http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2009/06/3ality-digital-ceo-steve-schklair-talks.html):
Steve’s passion for achieving the best possible 3D experiences for his audiences is infectious, and I learned a great deal from speaking with him. He also gave me the exclusive scoop that Peter Jackson is committing to shoot all his films in 3D, and will be working with 3ality Digital’s rigs and technology to do so. I assume that The Hobbit is more of a Guillermo del Toro film than a Peter Jackson one. Still, from the Empire magazine scans (http://www.hobbitforums.com/showthread.php?t=42) that were posted a few months ago, it sounds like they haven't made a decision either way yet.

I'm hoping they don't end up doing it. To have the two Hobbit movies suddenly be in 3D wouldn't be consistent with the trilogy - and the technology is so new that it does feel like a gimmick to me. I've been watching films in 2D for a really long time; I don't see any particularly compelling reason to switch now.

What do you think?

Mostly I agree that it would be weird to suddenly have them be in 3D, when the trilogy wasn't, but maybe it could be done well? I don't know... The Hobbit seems like more of a "fairytale world" to me, and because that, it seems like it could be told in 3 dimensions as well as any story.

Hmm... I can sort of see that, though I still would prefer they keep it consistent with the trilogy.

Plus, 3D movies usually cost more to see, and if I see it as many times as I did the trilogy it could add up. :p

if I see it as many times as I did the trilogy it could add up. Yup, that goes for me as well

I'd also prefer them not to do the Hobbit in 3D... First of all, like many of you, because the trilogy wasn't. But more importantly, I'd hate it if I needed those stupid glasses every time when I wanted to see it. I'm already looking forward to having bought the dvd and everything. I have one 3D movie at home, but haven't even watched it with the glasses because I kept seeing everything in green and red, instead of 3D. It's just not practical.

True, though I don't think the glasses they give you in theatres are colored; it's just the ones that come with DVDs. And lots of 3D movies have non-3D DVD versions.

Though, as I've already stated elsewhere, I'm still hoping they don't do it.

Now that you mention it, they aren't... I didn't get coloured glasses when I went to see Beowulf, in any case. Perhaps I should make sure to keep the pair, next time I go to watch a 3D movie in the theatre. :p
Though off course, you are supposed to return them... I wonder if they'd be willing to sell it to me if I asked.

In the theatres in my area, you aren't supposed to return them (though 3d movies are $3 more to see). But when you go to the theatres it uses a completely different system to display the 3d, one that home screens aren't capable of doing, so they wouldn't be much use.
