In the beggining Bilbo didn't want to take Frodo on hes journey, although Frodo wanted to join him. He also doesn't care of Frodos feeling and leaves unexpected, without making a chance for Frodo to accompany him or just to say goodbye.
In the Extended edition of Fellowship of the Ring movie, Bilbo says: "I'm very selfish, you know. Yes, I am. Very selfish . . . I don't know why I took you in after your mother and father died, but it wasn't out of charity. "
Also, he didn't inform Frodo in any way where he is and Frodo just wanted to see him.
What do you think? make your own opinion about that! ^^

I donīt think, that Bilbo is selfish, but he was probably feeling it like that. Maybe he was. A little.
But if he said it and acknewledge a mistakess, I think, it's good and better, then if he didn't do it.

Yeah, he is sort of selfish, he was just going after his own desires. XD

It's kind of hard for me to separate book-Bilbo and film-Bilbo, but in the book I don't think Bilbo came across as selfish at all - he did let Frodo know he was planning to go, and Frodo didn't truly want to start his adventures at that point anyway. He was happy in the shire. Even when he did finally set off, a part of him didn't want to.

That's right, but still I think Bilbo was going more after his feelings, and he left in a surprise not to all hobbits on the unexpected party, but for Frodo itself although he knew Bilbo is going to leave. It is sort of a selfish thing to do, you know...

Well, I don't think Bilbo's selfish. I think it's the ring he wore all that time.
Plus he's rich.. That could make him selfish aswell. But his personality isn't I'd say. Otherwise he wouldn't have taken Frodo in his house.

I never thought of him as being selfish myself. Thought he'd just had a bit too much to drink and was thinking about his plan to leave the shire. Plus, as lextrix said, there was the burden of carrying the ring all those years...
