View Full Version : Anyone feel like reading The Hobbit as a group?

My idea was to do it at the fairly slow pace of one chapter per week, which would hopefully give everyone the chance to participate even if they're busy with other things (or other books). It'd also ensure that no one falls behind, and make it easy for anyone who joins late to catch up.

Each week we could have a thread open to discuss the chapter in question. We could talk about anything related to it (observations, favorite bits, etc), but I was personally planning to pay particular attention to how various pieces might be adapted in the film.

There are 19 chapters, so at the rate of one chapter per week, it'd take about five months. Gives us something to do while we wait, at least. :)

I'm all up for it. We could discuss things and really go into the tiny details if we do it slowly. And indeed, if people don't have a lot of time (like me at the moment) they can still happily join in :D

I'd be up for doing it as well!

Oh, unfortunately, I haven't got any Tolkien's books in english and translate it is incredible...XD But it's great idea. I'll be contributing by my comments. XD

The translation is... incredible? You mean incredible as in, untrustworthy? Because "incredible" can also mean amazing.

Sorry - I'm a bit confused. But I think it should be easy enough to make comments on the chapter of the book even if the copy you read isn't in English; the scenes would be basically the same.

Yeah, sorry, I meant it as untrustworthy...^_^

I would love to do this! It's been ages since I read The Hobbit. Been wanting to, but I don't have alot of sparetime, so this is a great idea.

Happy to start whenever. I'll need reminding though because I have an awful memory.

I was trying to work out when the most logical day of the week to begin was, but I think I'll go with Monday (tomorrow). That way people have the option of reading the chapter over the weekend before the new thread is created.

I'll probably send out an email about it to members, just to make sure that everyone who might want to join in gets to hear about it.

So I never got around to it today. Oops.

I'm not sure exactly when I'll put it up - Monday seems like a good day, so maybe not for a week - but anyone who's interested can always read the first chapter of The Hobbit in preparation while they wait. :)

EDIT: never mind what I said here. I just noticed the thread Emmie started on Chapter 1.

I think the point is to get us talking about the same parts of the book. We'll all be reading the book at the same time, at the same pace, so we can discuss the same things as we go through it.

:)

Pretty much. I knew I wanted to read The Hobbit again, and, since I don't have an enormous amount of time, that I would probably do it pretty slowly anyway. And I thought that if anyone else felt the same way, we might as well do it together so we could discuss various bits as we went.

If you don't feel like joining in that's completely fine. :)

I would have really liked to do this, but I am going on holiday soon, and I don't know if I'll have much of an internet connection.

I'll still read the book though, and hopefully I'll be able to discuss at least some of the chapters:)

How long will you be gone for? Because even assuming we move on to Chapter 2 next Monday, it'll take about five months to get to the end. Unless you'll be gone longer than that, you could easily catch up when you get back.

And who knows, you may find a computer somewhere. :)

I'm going to Norway to visit my family for about 2 months(might be as long as 4).

My moms got a computer, but apparantly it's close to dying:rolleyes: Hopefully I'll survive a few visits to hobbitforums:D:p
