Becoming Jane - 6/10

I watched this because I wanted to see James McAvoy in something other than Atonement.

There were a lot of things that annoyed me. As someone who was learning about Regency England for a while, I feel like a lot of the scenes and actions of the characters are completely unrealistic. I also thought Anne Hathaway was horrible as Jane, even though I like her in some other movies.

Also, there were three sequences where they "fade" between a succession of shots with music playing in the background. It just seems like an amateurish and lazy way of showing something that could almost always be done much more elegantly, if the writers/directors/producers took the time to do it.

For all of that, though, it did convince me that James McAvoy would make a perfectly good Bilbo.

If you do want to see James McAvoy in something other than Atonement that he's really good in, look for an independent film called Inside I'm Dancing. He plays a young Irishman disabled with Cerebral Palsy (I think).

It was the first thing I saw him in and I still adore the film. It never made much money and didn't come out in many theatres but I really like it. It's a very touching film and I personally think he's incredibly good considering the limitations of the role.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely have a look at that sometime.

The last movie I saw was The Boat that Rocked and I loved it. The cast was excellent and I am a huge fan of music from the era anyway so the soundtrack definitely was rocking.

A funny and touching film that had me cheering and almost crying in places.

8.5/10

Aw, I want to see this. But it doesn't come to the US until August according to this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131729/releaseinfo). The only two countries who get it later are Brazil and Slovakia. I wonder what the reasoning behind that was - to build up hype from reviews in other countries, or something?

Just so you know, I intended people to post a quick rating along with titles. :) (Like, give them a number from 1 to 10, 1 being terrible and 10 being amazing.)

Ah, sorry. ^^

*shrug* Possibly because it's British-made they weren't sure of the appeal in the US? I have no idea, really. I like it when we get things first but that's generally because I'm bitter than America gets everything else first! ;)

I don't like this part of Harry Potter's books. My fav is The Prisoner of Azkaban XD

27 Dresses

I give it two apathetic "eh's" up.

Romantic comedies make no sense. And they are too formulaic to be interesting to watch.

Last week I saw an Indian movie called "Muqaddar Ka Sikanddar". Don't ask me how to pronounce, but I know that Sikanddar is a variation of Alexander, as in Alexander the Great.

I give it 5/10. It was made in 1978, and though I've seen many newer Indian (Bollywood) movies, I decided to rent an older one to see the differences. This one was very much like the newer ones. At least, the basic themes are the same, and the emphasis on songs and colors. But it's hokey as all get out! And very sad. I was expecting a happy ending. :(

I've seen several newer ones that were pretty good, though.

I saw Easy Virtue a few days ago. I'd give it 7 / 10 or so - I actually enjoyed it a lot.

Hmm, the very last movie I saw, was Mission Impossible III yesterday.
For some reason, I thought it wasn't as good as the other two. On the other hand, it wasn't an entirely bad movie either. Let's say a 7...

Friday night, we were watching The Librarian 3, but unfortunately I fell asleep. From what I've seen of it, I think I like it better than the second one. That may be because it's situated in New Orleans, though. I went over there last year, in March, after having dreamed of seeing New Orleans for more than 10 years. Recognizing places and buildings in movies is awesome. :D
Anyways... I'll come back with a rating once I've actually seen it entirely.

Jennifer's Body - 7/10. I wasn't sure that I would like this after everything I heard and the reviews I read, but I actually did a lot. Particularly the ending.

Lol! I still haven't seen The Librarian 3 in its entirety! I'm trying to remember the last movie I saw, though...

Could it have been Minotaur, I wonder? I wasn't too fond of that one. Well, rather, I felt a bit disappointed since I had expected more of it. I suppose I wanted to see too much of the Greek myth in there, when there really wasn't much in there of the original myth. Not worth more than 5 out of 10.

Digging up this thread again to rate a couple movies I've recently seen...

The Mists of Avalon, a film adaptation of the book by Marion Zimmer Bradley... 7.5/10. Rewatching it so recently after having read the book, made me realise it was less true to the book than I thought at first. Still, it is a good miniseries, especially if you haven't read the book at all.

Cloverfield. More exciting and less getting on my nerves as Blair Witch Project. Not absolutely amazing, but overall not too bad either. 7/10

Hehe, we're enjoying the movie-channel for free for an entire month, and already we've been programming lots of movies to watch in our own time...

So far, we've watched:

Australia: Been ranting about this in another thread as well, so I'll just stick to rating it here. 9/10!

The Dark Knight: Possibly even better than Batman Begins... Heath Ledger was indeed absolutely awesome as The Joker. Just like with the first movie, though, at some point it started to feel a bit too long indeed, but luckily the moment passed fairly quickly. 9/10 as well for this one.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - around 7/10. I was struck by how some of the scenes are so surreal and generally weird and yet still manage to be entertaining. And I liked most of the actors and thought the story was good, even if I didn't completely understand everything on my first viewing.

Quantum of Solace: 8/10... Generally liked the movie, and if you ask me, Daniel Craig makes an even better Bond than Sean Connery. He is grimmer, and more realistic.

Hancock: 5/10 Wasn't too impressed. It's listed as a comedy but didn't think it all that funny to be honest.

Fool's Gold: 7/10 Better comedy than Hancock, if you ask me. Predictable, off course, but I didn't mind.

The Happening: 9/10. I seem to always at least like M. Night Shyamalan movies.

City of Ember: 8/10. Very cute. :D

Just got back from the drive-in movie theater, I saw Shrek 4 and Iron Man 2.

Shrek 4: 2/10. Definitely not nearly as funny or cute as any of the previous 3 Shrek movies. Also, I thought the premise was rather contrived, much like the typical dream sequence.

Iron Man 2: 7/10. Fun action movie, but not anything special, imho. I'm not huge on Iron Man to start with though, so I'm somewhat biased. I liked Mickey Rooney, I wish his character was more involved/had more lines.

Gran Torino: 10/10. I really really enjoyed this movie. Rather slow, but fits with Clint Eastwoods character. I found it funny, and quite touching.

Mysterious Skin: 10/10. This movie is a few years old, I saw it for the first time last night. I was at my boyfriend's house flipping through his dvd's, when I came across a movie Id never heard of before, the description on the back intrigued me, so I decieded to watch it. It is in a nutshell its a story about two young boys who were sexually abused by their little league baseball coach. One of the boys(who is homosexual) interprets the coach's abuse as an initiation into sexuality. He becomes sexually compulsive, particularly attracted to middle aged men and becomes a prostitute. The other boy developes psychogenic amnesia and forgets the events entirely, while suffering from violent nosebleeds, he also becomes very withdrawn(in his late teens) everyone assumes he's asexual because of his lack of intrest in anybody. Eventually the two boys meet for the first time in over a decade, where their secrets are revealed and healing process can finally begin. It was such a good movie. It was thought provoking, had good acting, interesting characters, and it had a great soundtrack. What more could I ask for? Their also a book for this movie which I will definately be picking up on my next Barnes & Noble run.

I love having all these recommendations - just looking over the past few posts in the thread has reminded me of (or introduced me to) a bunch that I'd like to watch.

The plot description of Mysterious Skin doesn't make me want to immediately rush to see it, but the ratings on imdb and rottentomatoes are so high that I may try it anyway.

Anyway:

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - 8/10.

Following - 9/10 - It's an early Christopher Nolan film, still very similar to the stuff he does now. I really liked the simplicity of it. Beginning was a little slow though.

Goldfinger - 6/10 - My boyfriend loves James Bond and decided I needed to see more. I fell asleep halfway through this one. Not my favorite, although I do still like Sean Connery better than any of the other old Bonds. Daniel Craig is still the best though ;P

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - 5/10 - I have a lot of old(er) movies on Netflix instant queue, just because I've heard about them but never seen them. This one didn't impress. Wasn't bad, but nothing special, imho.

Ooh, I agree on Daniel Craig being the best Bond now! I do think he has modern technology on his side as well, though.

Last movie I saw, was, unexpectedly, Avatar, in the theatre. They're doing this special edition, lol, so I grabbed the chance of going to see it on the big screen. I absolutely LOVED it. Yes, the story was extremely predictable, but the scenery and the way the flimsy story is brought is soo stunning that I didn't mind at all.

Ahum, edited for the actual rating, lol... 9/10.
