View Full Version : LOTR actors in post-LOTR movies

I thought this might be an interesting discussion. :) It seems like so many of the actors from the films haven't done all that much, or at least have acted in only tv shows or small scale films that not many have heard of. I mean what ever happened to Billy Boyd? I loved him in LOTR. What about Liv Tyler? Miranda Otto? Sean Astin?
So I guess this could really be a two-part question. What are your favorite post-LOTR movies with Lord of the Rings actors in them? And what actors from LOTR do you wish we would see more of today?

Liv Tyler must be the most famous one of every name that you mention there, though even I have to admit that I can't really name any post-LotR movies with her...
Billy was in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, but to be honest I haven't heard of anything else.
I adored him as well, and wish we'd see more of him.

Dom Monaghan did Lost for a while, and he did an episode of Chuck. And Viggo's been in a good handful of movies since LotR. And don't forget Sean Bean's slated to be Ned Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series! (Which I am spectacularly pumped for, haha)
I liked the Island a lot, with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johanson. Sean Benn was the bad guy in that one.

Viggo was already in lots of movies before Lord of the Rings, lol... Just not in too many blockbusters I guess. Still, I really do like some of his other movies, and he puts up an outstanding performance in each of them.
Sean Bean actually tends to play villains quite often. National Treasure anyone? I seem to remember him in another movie as the bad guy as well, but can't remember the title at all. Though now that you mention it, I do remember him in The Island as well. :D
I loved Lost, by the way... Also, Dominic appeared in that Wolverine-movie...
And wasn't Miranda Otto in War of the Worlds? But that's the only other movie I've seen with her in it.
David Wenham was absolutely awesome in Van Helsing, but I can't think of anything else he was, that I've seen or heard of.

David Wenham was in Australia too, which I thought was really good. Totally had to IMDB him though, nothing besides Van Helsing came to mind right away. I don't think I've seen Miranda Otto in anything else either.
And I totally forgot Dom was in the Wolverine movie...though that may have to do with the fact that I saw it at midnight and don't remember much from the movie in general.

Speaking of X-Men, it did feel strange afterwards to see Ian McKellen in there as Magneto... For some reason, I could never get used to him with short hair, lol.
Australia... It's one of those movies I actually want to see, but haven't gotten around to so far. The past few years, this happens a lot to me. I missed Avatar in the theatres as well, by now, while I would have loved to go and see it.

I have the same problem with Ian McKellen. I hear his voice and I'm like, Gandalf!? Where?! Oh. Not Gandalf.
I definitely recommend Australia, I thought it was well done. A little on the long side though.

Lol, it isn't as bad in The Da Vinci Code, though. I guess because by then, I was already used to it.
Don't mind long movies at all. And somehow, I doubt it'll be as long as Return of the King was. Then again, I could say that none of the LotR-movies is actually long enough. :D

Uh, I wish to see more Hobbits and in movies today. Not only as an episode role...
I liked Wood in Hooligans - maby because it was so different from LOTR, I know he've done more movies but none of them was very famous. The same with Bloom - after succes of Pirates he is not very visibe...Anyway, I hoped they will be more famous and appear often on the screen but well....
I know Miranda was in War of the Worlds of spilberg but I haven't seen it. I've heard that she slowed down afer she had a child...I would like to see her more often as well..
Anyway, looking on the Internet we can learn most of them still appear in the moviesor tv series..but won't be ever so famous as LOTR.....
OK, 2 more things:P
I am eageily waiting to see Black Death http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEualA0ujdo
Boromir wasn't my favourite character (somewhere in the middle of the list;) ) but I like Sean Bean personaly - he seems to be a nice, friendly guy! Although in Black Death he looks a bit like Boromir (well, he can not change his face) the movies looks quite interesting.
Anf for the end - I've heard Viggo who said he is not interested in playing in movies anymore as he has some other stuff to do....I hope it is not true or at least he will still appear in Hobbit...anyone know anything about Viggo?

I'm not sure when he might have said that, but he just did The Road last year, has one movie in pre-production on IMDB.com, and another role that's rumored. So maybe he's just slowing down? He did do a bunch of movies post-LotR (Hidalgo, Eastern Promise, a History of Violence, Appaloosa).

Actually, I think Bloom was fairly present in post-LotR-movies... He didn't only appear in Pirates, but there was also Kingdom of Heaven and Troy... and some others, as well, but can't remember the titles very well. Haven't seen them lol.
Viggo has indeed been in quite a lot of movies since Lord of the Rings... In Alatriste for example, he had the lead role as well. Would still like to see Appaloosa sometime soon, and recently bought Eastern Promised to watch. A lot of the movies he stars in aren't really my kind of movie though... Still, his performance is always really good, no matter if I like the actual movie or not.

You right Lan about some movies with Bloom, what I mean now is quite qiuet about him...
I forgot to mention about my surprising when I recognised karl Urban in The Chronicles of Riddick - he looked so different. Although know he plays in many movies it was only the one where I saw him (well, probably where I recognised him;) )
And I love also Wenham in van Helsing(nit maby the entire move) but I agree his role was awsome. I remember he was also in Public Enemies(good movie!) but my attention was directed more towards Deep and for some reason I do not remember very much of him there - well, good excuse to watch it again;)
concerning Viggo - what I remember it was his recent comment - after menationed by Rowan movies...anyway, probably if he gets good script maby he coud not resist?

Sowen: Aye, was thinking the same thing afterwards about Bloom... Seems he is indeed a bit less out there these days.
Oh! We gave in to the digital tv madness in Belgium, and so it is that I will be seeing Australia a lot sooner than I thought, after all... They were playing it on the movie-channel we get for free for the month, and I had my Ranger 'tape' it so I can watch it over the weekend. I'm very curious indeed. Nicole may not have been in Lord of the Rings, but I always did like her as an actress. :D
Speaking of Carl Urban... Did anyone ever watch Xena, Warrior Princess here? It's so funny he used to be Cupid in that series. But allright, it's not exactly post-LotR lol...
A movie with Urban that I do believe was made after the LotR, is Doom. But I wouldn't call it a good movie, really. Still, if you don't expect too much from it (and seeing as it's based on a videogame, I didn't :p ), it's entertaining enough.
As far as the Chronicles of Riddick go, I liked Pitch Black lots and lots better.

I'm glad you'll be able to see Australia sooner rather than later! Hope you enjoy it :)
Haven't seen Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick, though I kind of want to. Usually when they're on tv I only find them when they're half over, and I'd want to see them from the beginning.

I was watching Xena long time ago and I remember there was some Cupid character..but obviously I didn't know it's future Eomer and I didn't pay attention to the actor at all..anyway, thinking about it now it sounds also very funny for me - I wish to see it again and have some laugh;D
Hobbits maby would suits to that role...but Urban or Mortensen for instance? hahahaha Vigo with sweet curly hair and white dress...

Rowan, I absolutely LOVED Australia! From the first seconds already, I thought the cinematography was absolutely lovely, Nullah was so adorable, and the story was great. Maybe not the most original, but still captivating. ;)
I had forgotten it actually starred Hugh Jackman as well. Usually like him as well ever since X-Men. And David Wenham was absolutely awesome! His character really got on my nerves, he really annoyed me to no end, which means David acted the part very well.
Lol, and I'm like that as well... If I even missed the first 5 minutes of a movie, I rather don't bother and watch it some other time.
Sowen: A friend needed to point me out to it, at the time, as well... But yes, Urban's Cupid in Xena, AND actually he played the part of Caesar as well. Very different roles, lol. As Cupid, he was actually mansized, though, had bronzish skin and yellowish blonde hair. He didn't wear a white dress either, if I remember correctly. He didn't very much look like the typical Cupids lol.

Yay! I'm glad you liked it, and I totally agree with David's performance. I wanted to strangle him before the end of the movie. And I have a soft spot for anything with Hugh Jackman in it, the man is just nice to look at!

I've been meaning to respond to this post for a while now, but there are always so many actors to mention that it's taken me forever to do so! Anyway, to mention a few:
Elijah Wood - Did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) which I liked a lot, and Everything is Illuminated (2005) was pretty good too. But there doesn't seem to have been much of note after that. I have heard The Romantics (2010) is good, and I want to see it when it comes out, but I wish we'd see him more often. (The two upcoming projects listed are both voice roles.)
Orlando Bloom - Enjoyed all of the Pirates movies. From what I remember, I saw Troy (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and Elizabethtown (2005) on DVD mostly because I was curious about how he was in them, although I don't really remember what I thought of them. And it's nice that he does have a number of upcoming projects listed. :)
Viggo Mortensen - I really liked most of what he's done, and he seems to have been in about one new movie per year for a while now.
Andy Serkis - King Kong of course, and I liked him in Inkheart. He has a number of other projects listed, too (Tintin and The Hobbit, but others as well).
Sean Astin - Net sure; he's been in a lot of movies since LOTR and has some upcoming ones, but I haven't actually heard of any of them before.
Ian McKellen - I liked seeing him in the X-men movies, even if it was a little weird at first. And I saw Emile.
Miranda Otto - Haven't actually seen her in anything since LotR
Liv Tyler - Same.
Billy Boyd - Master and Commander as has been mentioned, though I actually forgot he was in it until you mentioned it. Would like to see him more!
Dominic Monaghan - I'd also like to see him do more. The only thing I've really seen him in is Lost. But I've only watched the first season and part of the second, and I may not continue since I liked the first season more. But he was one of the actors that I really liked.
Also, I agree that Australia was good! For some reason it didn't even occur to me that it would belong on this list until you mentioned it. :)
