from: http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2010/01/05/the-hobbit-casting-call-out-for-lead-roles/

"The official casting call is out for the lead roles in The Hobbit with details going to the major agencies regarding the parts of Bilbo, Thorin Oekensheild, Fili and Kili, Bard, Primula Brandybuck, Gloin, Drogo, Itaril, Radagast The Brown and the voice of Smaug.

Did you spot the odd one out?

Here’s the details released about the part of Itaril:

ITARIL - female, A woodland Elf, this character is one the Silvan Elves. The Silvan Elves are seen as more earthy and practical. Shorter than other elves, she is still quick and lithe and physically adept, being able to fight with both sword and bow. Showing promise as a fighter at a young age, ITARIL was chosen to train to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard. This is the only life she has ever expected to live, until she meets and secretly falls in love with a young ELF LORD. This role will require a wig and contact lenses to be worn. Some prosthetic make-up may also be required. LEAD. AGE: 17-27.

A little artistic license to introduce a strong female character perhaps?"

It's news from January but for some reason I haven't see it before.

Do you know/hear anything about it?
Do they want to make strange changes to the plot?
What role could she play in Hobbit? Would be just a short mentioned story or anything more serious?

(well, I have noticed after a while that I forgot there was a topic about femele role already in "actor speculation" section - but I don't know how to delete this one and move this info to the old one :P)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
to go a little further: a young elf-lord - could be Legolas?

Great stuff, Itaril sounds like a good character - still I think that the making of this movie is down to the casting of Bilbo.

I'm pretty sure that several major news sites have claimed that this casting call was fake, but that there will be a lead with a female character (as discussed in this thread (http://www.hobbitforums.com/showthread.php?t=134)). Of course, I suppose that there is a small chance that they're wrong. :)

I actually had not seen this one before either, and I was about to jump up with excitement. As Sam points out, Itaril does sound like a good role, and I have heard the rumour about one female lead role before. IF that one is true, lol. I know I posted it, but not everything you find on the internet is true, they say.

An Elf from Mirkwood would, in my opinion, come into it too late, if you ask my opinion. Mirkwood's at least halfway through the entire book after all.

Only time will tell.

it sounds...as long as she will look as an elf, won't make stupid faces as Liv, the elf-lord will be handsome^^;) and the plot will not be too much concentrated on her (it's Hobbit film!)

Well personally I'm not sure if I believe this - like Emmie I seem to remember theonering.net saying that they heard it was fake.

If it is real... I like the idea in gerneral, but I hope that the romance between this character and the "elf lord" doesnt' take up too much of the movie, since it wasn't part of the book at all.

I tracked down the post: http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/01/04/34841-major-roles-being-cast-for-the-hobbit/ :) It says:
After touching base with more of our contacts, we’ve been notified that this is not a valid list of lead roles and, in fact, some of the roles listed in the links are not relevant. Stay tuned here for more casting information as we get it, and rest assured we will follow every new story to confirm whether or not it is legit.
I'm not entirely sure what they mean by "some of the roles listed are not relevant." (Or in the comments when the author said "this particular list isn't legitimate at this time.") It kind of makes it sound like they're denying it, but not completely 100% denying it. Or am I reading it wrong?

Hmm, reading over it again, I'm thinking there might be more than one role in there who seems out of place... What on earth would Primula Brandybuck be doing in there, for starters? Somehow I doubt that'd be a lead role...

And does Radagast the Brown make that much of an appearance in The Hobbit? I don't remember him being in there at all, but then again, it has been a fairly long time again since I last read it. Still, they cut him out of Lord of the Rings so why would they suddenly have him appear in The Hobbit?

Though I do have to agree with you Emmie, that they aren't very definitive in denying it. Perhaps this concerns a list they may have been considering at some point... Or have partially accepted by now...

Lol, I hate not being certain of anything. ;)

what more can I say - that probably all will be suprised anyway:>

I have also questions about Primula; lead role?? - they should not look someone for Lobelia for instance? (well, maby it will be the same actress like in LOTR?) What I remember from the book, there was Rdagast in the book somewhere for a momment but I took the book to Poland and have no source to chceck where - but it wasn't the lead role as well....They should give us more information! It's not so long to start making the film at least!

Hmm, probably I will have to borrow the book and read it again anyway;)

Don't get me wrong though, I'd actually LOVE to have Radagast in there...
But someone who has to be in there, is Beorn. He's not what I would call a lead role either, and I'm hoping that's the only reason why he doesn't appear in that list.
