I was just noticing that lordoftherings.net says "Available on Blu-Ray, DVD, on demand & for download April 6th." (Not sure why they mention DVD - presumably they will be the same DVDs they have now and they're just mentioning it for the sake of completeness?)
In any case, it makes me wonder whether there will be a HD download option, and if so, whether I'm going to buy them. In a way, it'd be hard to resist for me, just because it's Lord of the Rings... but on the other hand, the quality of HD movie downloads still aren't close to blu-ray from what I've read, and for all I know there will be higher-quality downloads available in a couple years. And the ones being released on April 6th also aren't the extended editions.
Anyone else pondering the digital downloads?
I try to stay away from digital downloads as much as I can. Something about them always makes me edgy, I rather have the item sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

I'm with Sam on this. I like having a nice box in my hands and everything. It gives me more the idea of having a finished product in my hands than a download could ever do.
In these ages when you can download almost everything from the net, for only a small price or, illegally, for free, I still prefer to buy cd's and movies and books in a retail shop.
Besides... Them not being the extended editions is enough as well for me to not bother. I'm so used to the extended editions that the theatrical versions seem incomplete to me.

I agree with Sam and Lanyare that it's really nice to have a physical box.... especially for something like The Lord of the Rings.

*Chuckles*
One does wonder, though, how the illegal downloading can have such an impact when appparently, lots of people still prefer a physical box?

Good point - although I imagine for many people, they don't care so much about a physical box if it's not something that they really love (or if, say, they hadn't seen it before).
Anyhow, I feel the same way for the most part and I'd never give up my extended edition DVDs or their fancy boxes, but it's just that I would also like to watch the films again with a clearer picture than DVDs provide. And since I'm not getting a blu-ray system anytime soon, the only way I could do that would be the download.

Better quality is most definitely a good point as well... Personally, I'm at least going to wait until the Extended Editions are available, though. Besides, I don't have the right TV-set anyways.... Perhaps in a couple of months, after we've moved.

As it happens, it doesn't look as though I'll have to make a decision about this after all. There isn't a HD download option available.

That's too bad :( maybe they'll add it in the future.... eventually, I bet it'll be standard for downloaded movies to be in HD
