Just saw this on TORn, but appariently amazon now has the Lord of the Rings trilogy listed (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X9FLKM) as a blu-ray boxed set. It sounds as though they will be released later this year, and the extended editions will be coming in blu-ray sometime closer to the release of The Hobbit.
Anyone going to be getting them? Or the extended editions when they come out?
Personally I like the idea of the films in higher resolution, but probably will not buy them until a) Apple's OS X supports blu-ray, and b) I can fool it into thinking my display is HDCP compliant, because I have a very nice screen right now and I doubt I'll replace it for 5+ years. (I don't own a TV, watch all my movies on the computer.)

I think I will wait for the extended editions. (I actually don't have a blu-ray player either but I want to get one soon.) It just seems a bit expensive for me to buy both, so I might as well wait for my favorite versions of the films.

Theonering.net has a story about "anger brewing" over this.
Check out these review comments from people on Amazon regarding the blu-ray release of the theatrical editions. There’s a story there how, in this economy, people are angry at New Line for doing the ‘double dipping’ by releasing the theatrical first, and the extended later.

I'm not sure how I feel about people being angry over this. If you don't want it, you can always, y'know, not buy it and wait for the extended editions to be released - and really, that's probably the most effective way to convince the studio that their being greedy was a mistake.

I didn't buy that DVDs, but I saw some screenshots on the Internet. It's amazing.. I think it's improves the watching of the films! It's fantastic. ^^
Bah damn bluray making us all buy our DVDs again! xD I think my dad will get the non extended DVDs of LOTR as he likes the original films. Itll be interesting to watch, but I wouldnt invest in it personally!

Yeah, I think the same. How many versions can we buy? it's stupid. But, I'd love to see that version, anyway. ;)

I also have the original and extended editions of all three movies.
Since then they've come out with a version that has both versions of the movie on the same discs, but I don't really regret buying what I did because I love the special features on the four-disc extended edition sets. But the version with both does have a new documentary thing, and I ended up renting a couple of them from the video store just so I could watch it. Nothing too amazing, but it does have some extra footage that was fun to see.

I also got some collection books of LotR, I mean those with the photos from the movies! I also have the first soundtrack (FotR). So yeah, it costs too much money.

I have the extended versions, and I don't have a blu-ray player. I have no plans for the foreseeable future to do anything with blu-ray. Maybe somewhere down the road, but I'm not excited about it at this time.

Yeah, that's right. I can't manage in all that new technology stuff, really.

So I guess this is old news by now, but the release date was pushed back to sometime in 2010. I only just found out because I was thinking of getting a bluray machine (though I'll probably wait until next year to do it anyway.)

I find it somewhat frustrating that I will probably have to replace my entire dvd collection for Blu-Ray discs in the future, especially after going to quite a lot of trouble to replace my video collection for dvd's not all that long ago :(
Anyways, seeing as I don't have a bluray machine just yet, I'll probably wait until I've got one. May make an exception for the Lord of the Rings extended editions, though, if they come in a nice, new, shiny box. I'm a bit of a sucker for special and collector's editions. If there is one in Bluray I'm capable of buying it just in case, even when not owning the reader just yet. But Lord of the Rings would be the only exception I'd make.
Hopefully we'll be able to afford it, though. We have almost finalised buying our own house, so we'll have a loan to pay off and everything. There might not be too much room for a lot of extra stuff.

Lol. I don't think I would quite buy LotR in blu ray unless I had a machine that would play it, although if a great quality version of the extended editions come out, with lots of extras, it might be enough to get me to buy a machine to play it. :p

Hehe, Mithril... I might have to wait on buying the player itself, but there's no way I'd be able to resist to another collector's edition of the Extended Editions. Preferrably coming with other goodies as well. I really love the miniatures that were included in the gift boxes as well.

I'd love to get my hands on the Blue-ray set, but I'm not sure I want to plunk down for it. After all, I already have all the extended versions.
