Voice of Smaug?

There seem to be quite an impressive number of names being thrown around as possibilities. I don't have any idea myself, but what about you all? Anyone seem really appropriate? (Of course, there's always the possibility that they'll alter the voice of whoever they end up picking somehow.)

I guess Cristopher Lee has said he's interested (http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/07/13/29211-christopher-lee-offers-his-voice-for-smaug-wont-go-back-to-nz/) too, so long as he doesn't go back to New Zealand - though if they're going to do Smaug partly as a puppet so the actors have something to react to, they would probably want whoever does the voice around to interact with the actors as well.

I wouldn't mind Andy Serkis doing Smaug as well as Gollum, actually. He'd be really good.

If they don't choose him, I don't really know who else would be best, though... I'm sure there are many, many people who could do it acceptably.

Hmm, the only people I think would be good would be:

Alan Rickman
Jeremy Irons
John Hurt - though that might be a bit too 'Merlin'
Jason Isaacs would be amazing.

I don't know how I feel about having LotR actors voice the parts. I personally found it a little distracting that Treebeard was Gimli. Maybe Brian Blessed. I think it needs to be someone with a deep and gravelly voice.

I actually didn't realize that Gimli was Treebeard until I was watching one of the Two Towers DVD features. (And I saw TTT 6 times in theaters, more than any other LOTR film, so I had ample opportunity to pay attention. ;))
