I remember Peter Jackson talking about the possibility of doing this a while ago, and the only really new thing from the article is this:
Last week technicians at Weta, the production company that had worked on the trilogy, said they had experimented with 3-D battle scenes and proclaimed them to be “gob-smacking”. It's kind of unclear whether this is confirmed, or they're just speculating, but I would personally be pretty excited to watch the original movies again in 3D! And I know that it's a bit hypocritical of me, because I'm against the idea of the Hobbit movies being in 3D.
