Hmm, I wonder who this will and for what role... But aye, apparently there would be a majour female role as well.http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009/12/05/34501-exclusive-hobbit-casting-1-female-role/

I like this, actually - even if it does depart slightly from the book, I think it's something that was really needed. Though I have no idea who it could be.

I definitely don't mind a female touch either... No idea what we can expect, though I do hope this female won't be a Dwarf. After all, if she's going to be a Dwarf it might hardly be noticeable there's a woman. ;)
Girls!? YUCK! Jking :P Maybe a love interest for a character?

Haha. I ordinarily would advocate sticking to the book as closely as possible. But there weren't many women as main characters in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit has, um, none that I can think of. I still obviously loved the book, but I think it could be more of a problem in movie form (it'd be more noticeable, anyway).

Hehe, a love interest? That's not even entirely necessary as far as I'm concerned. :p
I suppose, if it's going to be a main part, she'd have to be one of the Dwarves. Otherwise, I reckon they could give an important role to a female in Dale or something.

Oh, I was going to say something regarding the love interest thing but I got distracted. Who would she be a love interest for? Not Bilbo, obviously. Not Gandalf. :p And I don't really think it would fit for the dwarves.
I think they could make a female dwarf work well if they did it right.
I cant really see a female dwarf :S Maybe a warrior type female from dale much like Eowyn.

I agree, Emmy. IF they're adding in a female as a love interest, she'd have to be intended for Brand for example. Or maybe Beorn's wife could be in there.
But in this case, I can't see a very elaborate role in there for a female...

Wait, didn't we already find out that the female is an elf?
Or did I imagine that part...?
I think it was a rumour but I dont know, my money is still betting that it is a character based around Eowyn.

I had not heard anything more about this mysterious female as what's mentioned in the article. I'd love to get some extra Elves in there. They are my favourite Race, to be honest. Hobbits are cutest. :D

I agree with Emmie to keep as close to book as possible.
Anyway, in the second film you will have Arwen, won't you? I just pray for any different actor than Liv:P

Women shouldn't be in The Hobbit...they should be in the Kitchen!
Joking of course! I think a female friend for Beorn should be introduced. He's lead a hard life; he deserves a nice gal!

To put in a female where all the characters were male, in this case, is stupid. People just seem to want a slut in every story. What other reason is there that men want a female role without reason?

Well, it's been months since the rumor first came up and we haven't heard anything about it since then, so it's always possible that it's false.

aye, there was somewhere such a discussion, long time ago I have even seen the rumour about the actress who may have the role..but I cann't find it now...however, there has been no up dates about it and maybe PJ changed his mind when fans were opposed?

Yeah, -1 to female dwarf. On a side note, are there female goblins? I assume so..

Lol, I definitely do remember a distinctly female Orc somewhere in The Return of the King.
I guess there's nothing for it but to wait, and we'll see. Hm, if PJ was convinced by fan's protesting against this, then why are we still getting stupid 3D?

I think that a female touch is needed in The Hobbit, but this character is Itaril, who is supposed to be a Silvan Elf from Mirkwood.
[ITARIL] FEMALE, A WOODLAND ELF, this character is one the Silvan Elves. The Silvan Elves are seen as more earthy and practical. Shorter than other elves, she is still quick and lithe and physically adept, being able to fight with both sword and bow. Showing promise as a fighter at a young age, ITARIL was chosen to train to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard. This is the only life she has ever expected to live, until she meets and secretly falls in love with a young ELF LORD. This role will require a wig and contact lenses to be worn. Some prosthetic make-up may also be required. LEAD. AGE: 17-27. ACCENT – STANDARD R.P.
I think it's most likely that Itaril falls in love with young Elf-Lord Legolas. After all, how many other young Elf-Lords does Middle Earth have? Although this would drive the newer fans crazy, I think it's a risky step to take, and that it has to be done correctly or else all is lost for the movie. The creators should also be aware of the purists watching them like eagles watching their prey- they would not be too happy about this at all.
I personally am a huge fan of Peter Jackson's works, and of strong female characters, but I am aware of others who are not as receptive to this idea as I am. Perhaps it is a tad bit too ambitious, but I'm not one to decide :)
Let's see how it goes- with our fingers crossed for good results.

As a purist, I don't think there is any good reason to put a female role in there. If it comes at the expense of tolkien's plot, I'll be crying in a corner. That being said, if they can do everything else justice, why not have a side plot, just to keep all those whingy feminists happy? ;)

I do agree with Daniel- after some reconsideration of this topic. The original plot of the book is quite well thought-out and very clearly Tolkienesque, and the filmmakers really do pose a risk of ruining this experience for those of us who stand by the books. The Tolkien-verse is very complex, deep and finely wrought, and many of the purists certainly do weep to see the intricacy of the master's web torn apart so by adding a character to the Hobbit simply for the sake of some screaming fangirls. :(
However as- I admit- someone who does sometimes have to control her inner-fangurlness (:o), this is a rather exciting change in the Hobbit, to see Legolas (coughOrlandoBloominawigcough) as the possible male counterpart in the Itaril romance.
I can see the emotion and the motive behind both teams here. But slowly, yet ever surely, I find myself having to side with the purists.

Yeah, I don't think I would like a Legolas/Itaril romance either... though I don't have a huge problem with both characters appearing, as long as their roles are somewhat minor. :)

I think that Legolas being alone when he sailed for Valinor in the books is a signification that the Elves truly were to leave Middle Earth, that their time there was done. That they would have no more children there. To include a romance for Legolas now would be a contradiction to Tolkien's possibly implied message.
And besides, even if (by some impossible chance) the Legolas/Itaril romance would not be included in the Hobbit, the fangirls will be sure to storm Fanfiction.Net and make sure it happens their own way. They, at least, are not to be appeased now.
The thing that bothers me the about Itaril at the moment, of all the confirmed facts, is her name. Itaril is a Quenya name, and Quenya is not a language that the Wood-Elves would speak. Perhaps the Sindarin form of that name, Idril, would be more accurate as the Wood Elves were very much influenced by the Sindarin language by this the Third Age. Hmmm...maybe I can contact Peter Jackson through Facebook...

Truly there were not many female's in Tolkien's works. However I don't think that necessarily excludes them form the movies, they lent a great touch to "The Rings" movies. Even the departures from the books like the rescuing of Frodo at the Fords outside of Rivendale worked well.

According to the latest reports, Saoirse Ronan won't be playing Itaril in The Hobbit. But perhaps this means that another actress will be found to fill the role?

I certainly hope not. The Legomance speculations are higher than ever, and I'm just hoping that if that's really the case, then they'll simply scratch her character from the movie. However, if they absolutely MUST cast her, then I hope they cast someone older this time, at least in their twenties- especially if there's a Legomance to be expected. Rather than the fact that there was a Legolas/Mary-Sue romance in the movie, what annoyed me the most was that Orlando Bloom was twice the age of Saroise Ronan. It was simply disturbing.

Hmm... I haven't heard too many of these Legomance speculations. I would be pretty against that, I guess, but I still think there's a good possibility that the character will be included without the romance.

Oh, the Legomance speculations are raging on fanfiction websites and a fair few circles in Facebook. I don't think they'll include it either, but I'm prepared for the worst, just in case it comes.

Unfortunately, I am sure of nothing regarding this matter. But I, like all of us here, do await the news of the casting.
