Ok, inspired by the thread I posted about the descriptions of things in LotR: http://www.hobbitforums.com/showthread.php?t=110 ... Does anyone have suggestions of other books that are similar in that way? I've had a hard time finding any. It seems VERY rare for a book to even get close to Tolkien's writing in that regard.
But I would love to be proved wrong.

Have you ever read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time? I can't remember if his descriptions really are as detailed, but personally I think he comes close to Tolkien's level in general. You get the same hints and atmosphere of an 'ancient world and history' woven through the main story. Very different in style, mind you. He's not a copy at all.
